"I can handle most men - I've broken more than one nose in the tavern..."
She smiles, rubbing her fist at the memory. "...But that one... *brrr*"
Eventually you settle down for the night, with Garrick, Shade, Sweetrede and Lana Greenvale sleeping in bedrolls atop deck, each keeping a two-hour alternating watch. The night is chill, and Lana snuggles her bedroll in close to Sweetrede - the most harmless-looking, most protective, and highest-CHA of the three of you - though with two layers of blankets between you Sweetrede is safe from any molestation... (O
You rise rather late the next morning (GM: 1 hit point back for rest, Sweetrede can regain spells; let me know any you cast). There are a few boats on the mighty Nemo, visible some way off, and in daylight you're only partly concealed by the rushes, so Edward only allows a couple knights up on deck at a time, to empty the nightsoil buckets over the side and stretch their legs. Then the four of you, Edward and a couple extra knights get to work poling the barge out from its reed bed and back onto the river. The morning sun beats down; It's hot sweaty work and the workers are soon sweating, stripped to the waist - Lana makes sure the brute Sir Gregor is safely below decks before she strips off her own jerkin again, to politely appreciative looks from the other two knights, who you don't know - but it looks that Sir Edward made sure to choose two nice young men of impeccable manners and chivalry to assist you, this time. Sir Edward also regards Lana with manly interest as she works, from his looks and the few words he exchanges with her you can tell he likes her, and she seems similarly impressed by the handsome nobleman, but he is of course impeccably courteous also. Sir Edward's wife Catherine is heavily pregnant with his second child, and it's unlikely he's enjoyed conjugal relations for some time, so it's only natural that a good-looking woman like Lana would divert him... But of course he is Sir Edward Kallent, a man of breeding and self-control.
Eventually you are out again on the river, and Edward heads below decks, leaving Lana in charge. The wind is not so favourable today, being westerly, so Lana decides to leave the mainsail furled; once you're out in the mid-current the boat heads along at a clipping pace, anyway. You quickly pass the village of Reeve on your right, it looks peaceful. Off to your left in the distance two miles off you can see Castlerock, a strong hold, high atop its hill - a major Herdley castle on the Dunfalcon Pike, and their primary northern defense should the Kallent ever attack from the north.

You sail on, passing the village of Riverdell to your right, and pleasant meadows and woodland give way to windswept heath. You are now only a few miles from the Abbey of the Black Monks, in the centre of Odric's dark power, and there are no other boats on the water, now. You pass on swiftly; that afternoon you pass the village of Gibbet's Corner and reach the mouth of the Arleigh Stream, a small river but navigable to a skilled boatman.
Lana turns to her crew, Sir Garrick, Sweetrede and Shade: "We need to enter the Arleigh Stream and pass upriver. This westerly wind favours us, but it'll be slow going upstream. The plan is to sail under the bridge at Earlshurst - we'll need to drop the mast there, and use the bargepoles - then I'll bring us to land just north of Castle Herdley tonight. The bridge is the most dangerous bit - I don't know who holds Earlshurst now, and even if it's still the Herdley, they may stop us in case we're Odric's men..."

Garrick takes a moment to set up a series of knocks as a signal for all to be silent below deck another for arms to be ready and another for an attack.
ReplyDeleteG @ SR "When we get to the bridge it might be worth you doing the talking if need be, if it is a lone sentry then maybe another of your talents could be useful if things seem to be going against us"
At a later point Garrick will take the time to have a few words with Lana "Those pirates last night could have ended our mission, are they commonplace on the Nemo? If we were to supply you with a ship and crew would you be willing to put a stop to the piracy, although if you did accept our offer and found yourself on the river with a supply ship belonging to our enemies, then a little freebooting would be acceptable of course, please do not answer straight away, take some time and think about it, we could always beat out the details furhter upon our return"
Lana Greenvale listens thoughtfully to Sir Garrick's words.
ReplyDelete"Normally the Nemo is safe enough; I've sailed it from Dunfalcon up to Yggsburgh all my life and rarely seen trouble, until these past two months. Of course if you meet Gold Hal on the river, you have to pay his toll... But he's gentle enough with us common folk..."
She smirks slightly - the notorious River Pirate Gold Hal is a perennial thorn in the side of the Yggsburgh and Redfort nobility, holding Lady Octavia de Redfort captive for a year, and recently even breaking loose his lover Bloody Rosie - who'd been captured by the Yggsburgh Swordsmen's Brotherhood - from the Yggsburgh salt mines, in a raid that's still the talk of the north. Apparently he's relatively kind to non-nobles though, and rapidly become something of a folk hero.
"But now... with Odric's brigands everywhere south of Kallent - some of them taken to river-piracy - and others, no doubt... and the Herdley in disarray... it's not good..."
She pauses.
"We were heading up to Kallent when a raider ship chased us - might have been that same one from last night. We got away, but my crew refused to sail back downriver, as you know."
Lana looks out across the shimmering waters, mulling things over.
"After this is over I'd be glad to take service with the Kallent, Sir Garrick. I know you're a good and honourable House... Even if a few of your Bannermen are lacking..."
She smiles and makes a thumbs-down gesture in the direction of belowdecks, where Sir Gregor is lurking.
"We can stop before the bridge to see if we see it is occupied, and - if we are under cover of darkness - I might be able to...distract those watching the river," says Shade, who seems to have changed somewhat, almost overnight. Must have been that weird wizard magic last night...
ReplyDeleteLana Greenvale looks over at Shade, as if noticing him for the first time. (>;))
DeleteLana nods.
"Whoever holds Earlshurst might have a chain over the river - though this barge has a very shallow draft, we might even be able to scrape over it... My father did that once. We'll certainly be spotted, if they have a guard at all. But if we can, we should try to get through without fighting. I think?"
She looks to Sir Garrick a bit uncertainly, as if for confirmation, then back to Shade.
"When Reeve Otto recruited me for Sir Edward, I didn't really get a full plan... Just take you to Castle Herdley, and wait. I suggest maybe I try to talk us past the bridge guard, but you could swim ashore first, and be ready to 'distract' them if necessary?"
OOC: I've updated Shade with the new stat array as discussed - http://smonsyggsburgh.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/book-2-player-characters.html - now instead of a 1e half-orc type repulsive lurker, he can be one of those Hollywood style darkly dangerous Hitmen! :D
G to Lana " Yes that would seem the wise course of action, you are known on this river and a familiar face talking to the guard, if indeed there are any, might put him at rest enough to let us pass without investigating the boat, perhaps even if it came to it you could offer a bribe as a last ditch effort before our friend Shade here goes about his business"
ReplyDeleteLana's face (you are looking at her face, right?...) shows some trepidation, but she nods in agreement.
Delete"Very well. I'll ask Sir Edward for a coin purse I can throw them if need be. If it's the Herdley at the bridge, I'll tell them we're running supplies up to Baron Melchet in Bury St Farlan. If it's Odric's men..."
~pause~
"Well that's where you Knights come in, right?"
She smiles a little grimly.
"Yes, let us explore all our options, and...if none work, then I shall seek to resolve the matter with mine own skills."
ReplyDeleteShade smiles warmly, apparently full of conviction. Who knows how chilling his innermost thoughts really are?
Lana nods, but something about Shade's words seem to unnerve her slightly (rolled 15 on CHA check). She turns away and starts readying the ship for the turn into the Arleigh Stream, she has the others help her with unfurling the mainsail and puts Garrick on the tiller. With the Westerly wind all goes reasonably smoothly and you are soon sailing upstream along the smaller tributary. At sunset you can see the lights of Earslhurst ahead, the walls close by the riverbank to your right, and the bridge looming over the river ahead. To your left past the muddy north bank with a few spots of rushes are a few buildings, including a large coaching inn, they seem shut up tight, but you can see a few window-lights. As you near the bridge Lana orders the sail furled, mast lowered, and barge poles employed so that you can punt under the bridge. Hard work for the four of you, and not fast. As you employ the bargepoles and draw slowly closer, you see a line of six crossbowmen appear atop the bridge ahead - they're in Herdley tabards with the crown-and-raven. Lana looks very nervous as she prepares to step forward to the prow and speak with them.
ReplyDelete"Okay, here goes..." she mutters to herself.
From the bridgetop a man's voice calls out:
"Who goes there? Friend or foe?!"
(PC actions? It looks like Shade should be able to slip off the back of the boat and swim ashore to either bank, but you can't be certain the men on the bridge won't spot you. The setting sun is in ther eyes, though).
Garrick gives the signal for all below to be ready but will stay by the tiller, while we are slowly approaching he will try to catch the eye of SR and nod towards the Guards and point to his mouth as an indication for SR to do the talking.
ReplyDeleteSR will move forward, hands visible at all times . "We sail to the aid of Herdley friends."
ReplyDeleteGM Sweetrede moves forward beside Lana and calls out to the soldiers: "We sail to the aid of Herdley friends."
DeleteLana: "This is Lana, of the Greenvale... You know me, we're taking supplies up to Bury St Farlan, like my man says. What news?"
CHA checks - Sweetrede rolled 14, passed by 1, Lana rolled 1, crit success.
A voice calls back:
"Ah Lana, Pearl of my My Heart! Will ye no give up yer wanderin' and come make an honest man o' me?!"
Lana squints, looking up.
"Tobias! You old dog! Good to see you!"
She smiles happily - genuinely relived. Tobias replies:
"Drop that load off and get down here, we've makin' up to do!"
Lana waves to the soldier: "Be sure of it!"
Shade does indeed slip off the back and quickly swims to shore, his sword, bow and arrows are wrapped up in his cloak and held aloft as he goes). He will quickly make his way through any shadows he can find until he can get a view of the bridge, from where he can watch proceedings.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't sound very practical, but what you can do is keep your bowstring dry eg just by wrapping it round eg your head, then string your bow once ashore; only takes a moment. Wet quarrels might reduce max bow range a bit but it won't make any difference in these conditions.
DeleteWhich bank are you swimming to? Check description.
DeleteEither bank, you come ashore undetected. From the friendly chatter emanating from bridge and boat it sounds as if your services may not be required this night...
