Prominent Families of Yggsburgh and the Council of Eight

The Ruling Class
Yggsburgh is governed by its Lord Mayor and Council of Eight, who serve for 10 year terms beginning on New Year's Day. The next term will start 1/1/101 YY.  There are no term limits, but it has become customary for Lord Mayors to serve a single ten-year term.
There are several dozen prominent families in Yggsburgh. There is not the strong distinction between mercantile families and landed interests found elsewhere in the Realm, and wealth is often the primary marker of aristocratic status, however military service to the city remains a requirement of knighthood, other than inherited knighthood (Baronetcy). Knights ('Sir' or 'Dame') are prominent personages, effectively minor lords in their own right. While Yggsburgh is a young city, the older-established families such as the Markles are often accounted as superior to the more nouveau-riches such as the Hawkes.

Women
Most prominent women of Yggsburgh are married, younger unmarried women being under the control of their fathers.  Prominent single women of Yggsburgh who are heads of household include the descendants of three former mayors:
1) The enigmatic and haughty Dame Elvira Arleigh (b. YY 65), grand-daughter of Sir Frederick Arleigh (Mayor YY 21-30). The Arleigh are related to the Counts of Herdley, making Dame Elvira blue-blooded indeed. Her younger sister Wilma is married to Chancellor Bennett Cornwainer (CZY pg 53), master of the mint and revenue; Wilma & Bennett have three young children. Dame Elvira is in mourning for her father Sir Niles Arleigh and mother Madam Alice Arleigh, both suddenly passed away last year (YY 95), leaving Elvira the estate.
2) The voluptuous Miss Candice Wright (b. YY 67, vanished 99 YY), socialite heiress to the Wright shipping fortune and grand-daughter of Raymond Wright, former Master of Merchants' Guild (Mayor YY 51-60). Her soirees and 'pool parties' are famous, and her bathing pool is said to be the finest in all Yggsburgh. Miss Wright's social set includes the banker Oswald Striker's twins Annabel & Ivy Striker (both vanished 99 YY)

and Victoria Markle, daughter of the College president. Candice is herself the older (by about forty minutes) of identical twins, her sister is the young widow Dame Lysana Arleigh-Wright of Hareboro, in County Herdley. The Wright Coster exports plenty of Yggsburgh's finest weapons and armour to Herdley.
3) Miss Judith Burdock (b. YY 74), only child late in life to Sir Hugh Burdock (Mayor YY 61-70) - a family of good breeding, but rumoured to be now impoverished, Sir Hugh's appetite for the gambling halls of Yggsburgh being as legendary as his prodigious consumption of wine. Most of the family estates in the South Pastures have been sold off to pay Sir Hugh's gambling debts. Graduate of Yggsburgh College, she is a contemporary of and friends with Alicia Hawkes.

The Upper-Middle Class
Below this 'upper crust' is a wealthy merchant and tradesman class including such family names as the Rasch haberdashers and the merchant's widow Elisabeth Chatterly. Many of these aspire to join the upper class in time.
It is disturbing to the ruling elite of the town that the property owning burghers have recently proposed an elected Assembly to assist the Lord Mayor and Council through advice and consent, for matters pertaining to the common folk. All property owners would vote, and the 25 candidates for the Assembly receiving
the most votes would be seated therein. Neither the Lord Mayor nor any Councilor has espoused the suggestion, and the property owners are becoming insistent.
