Campaign Calendar: Day 85, The 1st of Forunth (M4), in the Yggs Year 96.
Time ca 8pm.
Kjato Ragfoot: OK. Let's dress the wounded's wounds (including that of our living enemies), shackle the enemies still alive (so they are not going to run away, but delivered to Yggsburgh constabulary for a bounty), get to know who those slaves were and then search for treasure!
GM: You gather the wounded (include Opa) inside, and loot the bodies of the dead and wounded highwaymen.
Gold:
The highwaymen had a total of 342 gp on them in coin and assorted bits of jewelry, if divided by 6 that gives 57 gp each.
Mundane weapons:
The gang had 6 light crossbows, 9 quarrels each, plus assorted melee weapons including various daggers and knives, bastard sword, morningstar, scimitar and footman's flail.
Armour:
Lord Ollie was wearing a shirt of elfin chain (AC 5, mv 12") beneath his blouson, explaining why you had such a hard time hurting him. 5 brigands had jerkins of leather (AC 8 mv 12"), now with various cuts, puncture marks and bloodstains. The big woman likewise had a now-damaged shirt of heavy chain (AC 5, mv 9"), the bald, swarthy man had a hauberk of Easterling scale (AC 6, mv 6").
Magic:
Lord Ollie wielded a 'witchfire blade' (+1 longsword). The glum-looking highwayman who was the first to die carried a dagger made of a dragon's tooth (+1 dagger, +2 vs small creatures). Shadow had a potion flask with enough for 2 draughts, marked 'gaseous form' (she would likely have used it to escape, had your brave band faffed around rather than dive in to deal with these miscreants).
Edit: You locate Shadow's spell book in a pack by her table. While you cannot read the magic script, the contents page is in Common, and lists the spells as Read Magic, Jump, Message, Find Familiar & Magic Missile.
XP award: I forgot how much treasure gives in 1e! For defeating Lord Ollie and his band you get a whopping 830 XP each.
I suggest you use the comments to this post to discuss loot division.
____________
GM: You bind the wounds of the injured.
There are two pairs of iron shackles locked to chains affixed to the stone floor of the kitchen for securing the serving-slaves. There is a black iron ring hanging behind the bar with several keys on it. Searching the tavern reveals a side room containing two sacks full of Gertrude & Tabitha's fine velvet dresses, now spattered and stained with the mud of the roadway, and smaller sacks filled with the silver cutlery Rufus was taking to Yggsburgh. Four back rooms with cots also contain a set of shackles, these can be removed. The keys fit the shackles, you are able to remove them and use five sets to manacle the five captured highwaymen securely.

The Slave Girls
The two naked tavern slaves have been standing in shock at the carnage around them.
Aole:
As the adventurers busy themselves bringing in bodies and tending to the wounded, the pretty brown-skinned Nerian girl gingerly touches her neck, where the tip of Shadow's blade drew a drop of blood from her delicate skin. She approaches Duvader as he binds an unconscious brigand and kneels to speak with him, her accent exotic.
"Good Master Gnome, I thank you for saving me from that witch. I am the Princess Aole, daughter of Prince Zahv. I was travelling to Yggsburgh, when..."
She looks down, then continues.
"Master Gnome, I see that you are wounded, and some of your companions worse. The Lord has blessed me with healing powers, thrice each day. May I employ them to your succour?"
Nerian Princess Aole, daughter of Prince Zahv (NSFW)
(tag Duvader)
Elisabeth:
Meanwhile the other tavern slave, a good-looking, long-legged and curvaceous brunette of about 30, has been regarding Flynn and Garrick from behind the bar, before approaching the more charismatic of the twain. She addresses Garrick:
"Sir, are you the leader of this band? Did Yggsburgh send you to rescue me? I am the widow Elisabeth Chatterly, most wrongly enslaved by these brigands. If you could escort me back to Yggsburgh, I would be... most grateful..."
Elisabeth blushes and looks down, hands going to cover her naked breasts and loins.
Well i have to say that the longsword greatly interests me, as for the rest of the non-monetary loot i have no objections to anyone else taking what they need
ReplyDelete2 of the best fitting dresses i will hand to the 2 slave girls and comfort them in their obviously traumatic ordeal "We have come to rescue you, there, there, there, its all over now, your safe, i will protect you"
ReplyDeleteGarrick:
ReplyDelete>>2 of the best fitting dresses i will hand to the 2 slave girls and comfort them in their obviously traumatic ordeal "We have come to rescue you, there, there, there, its all over now, your safe, i will protect you"<<
Most of the dresses are clearly for a woman of much stouter build, presumably Dame Gertrude, but sorting through the pile, Garrick finds two of Tabitha's dresses that are only somewhat muddy, along with much of her delicate silk lingerie, panties, brassieres, slips and stockings. All very expensive no doubt. The slave women nod gratefully.
Aole:
"I thank you, good sir. You are most kind."
Elisabeth:
"Yes, thank you."
They turn away from Garrick and dress themselves, removing most of the cheap brass tavern jewelry they were previously bedecked with.
Aole's dress fits her well, a little tight on buttocks and bosom. Elisabeth is several inches taller than Tabitha and the dress leaves her lower legs bare, but otherwise is a reasonable fit. With boots from the dead female brigands, they should be able to walk.
ReplyDeleteElisabeth turns back to Garrick, brushing a stray lock of hair from her eyes:
"Thank you for rescuing me, kind sir, and your offer of protection. If you could escort me to my home in Yggsburgh, I would see you rewarded. I am a woman of some means..."
Princess Aole looks sad:
"Alas, I have nothing with which to reward you. Those brigands slew my brave bodyguard Mombatta, and took all the gold with which I was to enroll at the College of Yggsburgh. I am ruined..."
She looks teary-eyed.
Flynn will take the elven vest from lord ollie
ReplyDelete"our thief should have this dagger me thinks!"
GM: Garrick takes Lord Ollie's magic sword, Flynn takes his elfin chain shirt - it fits nicely. Duvader could take the dragonstooth dagger, although he doesn't have dagger proficiency.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteDuvader looks a bit puzzled at Aole, then nods. "Yes, it would be nice if you could heal me, Opa and Morganna. Oh, and why are you calling me master? Do you want to be my apprentice?"
ReplyDeleteOh, and he gladly takes the magic dagger - one never knows when a magic weapon might be handy, proficiency or not.
Garrick @ Aole Can you not send word to your people for a replacement bodyguard and monies for your tuition fee? whatever happens you shall not go hungry, you shall be under my protection until we restore you to the lifestyle that you are accustomed to.
ReplyDeleteDuvader:
ReplyDelete"Duvader looks a bit puzzled at Aole, then nods. "Yes, it would be nice if you could heal me, Opa and Morganna. Oh, and why are you calling me master? Do you want to be my apprentice?"
Aole looks a little taken aback:
"I am sorry, Mast- I mean, Sir Gnome. I meant nothing by it."
She pauses.
"Are you a wizard? I have heard that gnomes have great powers of msgic."
Garrick:
"Can you not send word to your people for a replacement bodyguard and monies for your tuition fee? whatever happens you shall not go hungry, you shall be under my protection until we restore you to the lifestyle that you are accustomed to."
Aole nods gratefully.
"I thank you sir knight. I can try to send a message, but Neria and my father are very far from here, and the expense for a messanger would be very great. Perhaps if I could borrow some money..."
Aole looks thoughtful as she kneels by Duvader and puts a hand on his chest, reciting a prayer to the Lord. Duvader feels warmth flood through him, and the pain of his wounds lessens: healed 4 hp, at 6/8.
Then Aole goes over to where Opa lies and does the same: Opa blinks and awakens! 6 hp back, at 6/10. Aole nods to her, then does the same to Morganna - Morganna awakens at 1 hp (2 hp back).
Aole: "I have eased your pain, but you are still wounded. At dawn I will pray to the Lord again for more healing power; enough to restore your friend."
She indicates Corak, who still lies grievously injured.
Duvader to Aole: "Ah, thanks. That feels much better."
ReplyDeleteHe squirms a little and scratches behind his ear before he continues: "And, uh, please, just call me Duvader. I am not a Sir or Master or Wizard or anything. Just an ordinary former soldier, now adventurer."
With this out of the way, he continues a little more firm again: "Widow Chatterly said she is from Yggsburgh. Perhaps you can stay at her place till you get news from your father? That means, if you two get along."
Flynn now @ AC 4/5 and will also take the spare bolts/quarrel and then search for some food.
ReplyDeleteAfter this he scans the countryside outside the Tavern checking the weather and the light.
He announces @ everyone (solemnly and lacking any humor)
"Darkness surrounds us now I fear and although it may hide our movements, we are exposed out here in the country. We should move quickly and quietly. Im sure that Ollie had friends and will be missed. The word will be out on us now. Let us escort these young ladies back to town immediately"
"And these oafs if we must"
ReplyDeleteOOC: Shadows spell book edited, above.
ReplyDeleteEdit: You locate Shadow's spell book in a pack by her table. While you cannot read the magic script, the contents page is in Common, and lists the spells as Read Magic, Jump, Message, Find Familiar & Magic Missile.
Duvader:
ReplyDelete>>Duvader to Aole: "Ah, thanks. That feels much better."
He squirms a little and scratches behind his ear before he continues: "And, uh, please, just call me Duvader. I am not a Sir or Master or Wizard or anything. Just an ordinary former soldier, now adventurer."<<
Aole nods.
"As you wish, Duvader."
Duvader:
>>With this out of the way, he continues a little more firm again: "Widow Chatterly said she is from Yggsburgh. Perhaps you can stay at her place till you get news from your father? That means, if you two get along."<<
Elisabeth Chatterly nods, brushing her hair with a comb she took from Shadow's pack.
"Yes, that would be fine, Aole. You can do a little maid work, to keep you occupied."
Aole frowns at that.
Flynn:
ReplyDelete>>Flynn will also take the spare bolts/quarrel and then search for some food.<<
GM: There's a pot of not very pleasant-looking grey-brown stew in the kitchen.
>>After this he scans the countryside outside the Tavern checking the weather and the light.<<
It's night. The sunset was red, indicating a likely sunny day tomorrow, but a slight moist chill in the air could indicate overnight rain.
>>He announces @ everyone (solemnly and lacking any humor)
"Darkness surrounds us now I fear and although it may hide our movements, we are exposed out here in the country. We should move quickly and quietly. Im sure that Ollie had friends and will be missed. The word will be out on us now. Let us escort these young ladies back to town immediately..."<<
Elisabeth, the Widow Chatterly, nods.
"The tavernkeeper is a great villain, and may be seeking out allies. But... the gates of Yggsburgh will be shut fast now till dawn. There are some little thorpes east of here in the South Pastures, but I'm not sure where we would spend the night."
"...And these oafs if we must"
GM: At that, Lord Ollie groans theatrically, and opens his eyes. He coughs, blood on his lips.
Lord Ollie:
"Feels like a rib pierced a lung..."
Ollie surveys the battered party of adventurers.
"Which one of you is in charge?"
That would be me, what do you want?
ReplyDeleteGarrick:
ReplyDelete"That would be me, what do you want?"
Lord Ollie:
"*cough*...I have powerful friends. You did well, to track us here and defeat us. They could use men with your skills. Join their service, and I'll see you well rewarded."
"you have money hidden away? im sure we could come to an arrangement if i were to know where this money was"
ReplyDeleteGarrick:
ReplyDelete"You have money hidden away? im sure we could come to an arrangement if i were to know where this money was."
Lord Ollie nods.
"Dradvil... in Dradvil."
Flynn, being native to the area, knows that Dradvil is a town on the western borders of the Talworth Marches, thirty miles east-south-east of Yggsburgh down the Purple Tower Road. It is ruled from the Purple Tower by the sinister Wizard Lord Uvoll Darktarn, chief vassal of Edgar, the Marquis Talworth. It is rumoured that Edgar greatly covets Yggsburgh and would like to add it to his domain.
Duvader: Going through Lord Ollie's effects, Duvader uncovers a vellum scroll - a map showing a detailed depiction of the Yggsburgh area, including the famed Castle Zagyg, here spelt 'Xagyg', in the Little Hillwood north of the city. Basically what is depicted here:
ReplyDeletehttp://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BmtEv_Mb0Ek/TvI0EPMKC4I/AAAAAAAAAOQ/TBHYS_l-ZAc/s1600/The+East+Mark.jpg
A note is scrawled in ink on the rear side of the map:
"The Castle's Cursed Fog is Lifting at last - the Mouths of Madness are revealed! Make haste to investigate, before treasure hunters steal the lot."
GM OOC: I've added the East Mark map as a footer at the bottom of this blog. Note that it's a "player's map" and may not be entirely accurate. >:)
ReplyDeleteMorganna Maple: With the Princess Aole's healing touch Morganna returns to consciousness, still dazed. She senses something... her gaze rises to the gloomy rafters high above, where a small and furry Ape clings, regarding her likewise - the Witch's Familiar!
ReplyDeleteDuvader: "Flynn, would you please help me with the horses? I want to make sure we can use them to transport prisoners and goods to Yggsburgh."
ReplyDeleteIf Flynn follows, Duvader will show him the map. "Do you know what this inscription means? I have never heard of these mouths."
GM: Flynn has heard of the exterior cave entrances on the bluffs beneath Castle Zagyg referred to as the Mouths of Madness. They have for decades been concealed beneath a strange cursed fog.
ReplyDeleteThe six riding horses seem in good condition, and well supplied with tack & saddle.
Flynn @ Duvader "I hail from the forest at Wychwood, not far from Zagyg, Evil and foul things dwell there, there may well be untold riches to be found, but you will pay for it with your life" and then turning his attention to the horses. "these are in fine fettle, we should away under the cover of darkness"
ReplyDeleteGM: Corak and the other three wounded bandits are slowly recovering consciousness.
ReplyDeleteYou have six horses, each can carry two people at walking pace. You have eight people badly wounded - 5 brigands and Corak, plus Morganna & Opa-Loca are a little better off, having received healing draughts. They could share 4 horses, 2 horses each being led on rope by Garrick & Flynn riding the 5th & 6th horses, with Princess Aole and the Widow Chatterly riding behind the two warriors respectively. Duvader is small enough that he could share Morganna & Opa-Loca's horse, they being lighter than the others.
Thus none of you will have to walk, though your pace will be slow, around 2-3 miles/hour at best.
GM: As per pg 82 DMG, Corak Opa-Loca & Morganna will need to rest for a full week, minimum, before being ready for new adventures.
ReplyDeleteSo we would need about five hours to reach Yggsburgh? That means we would arrive at what time? (I am not certain what time it is right now).
ReplyDeleteIt's around 8pm, it's probably about 7 miles to Yggsburgh which is probably about 3 hours at a comfortable/safe walking pace at night, however the gate shut at dusk (6pm) and will open at dawn (6am).
ReplyDeleteThen it is probably wisest to stay in the tavern for the night, at least we have a roof and walls to keep wind and rain off. But we should leave early in the morning, at about 4 am.
ReplyDeleteFlynn "agreed, but we should at least keep a watch until dawn"
ReplyDeleteGM: OK, you decide to rest in the Welcome Wench tavern overnight. There are several cots in the back rooms; allowing one to the rescued women, three to your wounded, and Flynn Duvader & Garrick sleeping in shifts, you rest until 4am. You sense that you are being observed from the other houses of the thorpe, but no one troubles you and at 4am you load up on the horses and head out along the north track, which reaches the Dunfalcon Pike after half a mile.
ReplyDeleteThree miles east brings you to the Three Mile Mark, beyond which is densely settled land. You pass through several sleepy hamlets, and as dawn rises rosy in the east you catch your first glimpse of Yggsburgh's high grey walls and its famous Citadel atop a great bluff, rising like Venus from the dark waters of the Urt and Nemo rivers...
OOC: OK, suggest we start next session 7pm tomorrow Tuesday with your arrival at the gates of Yggsburgh.
OOC:
As the sun rises above the treetops to your east, the Nerian girl Aole requests you pause a moment that she might pray to the Lord. That done, she again applies her healing touch, beginning with Corak, twice, who recovers 5 then 7 hp, restoring him to 5/8 hp. She then heals Morganna again, 3 hp restores her to 4/7 hp.
ReplyDeleteAole has been riding behind Garrick, the Widow Chatterly behind Flynn. As you pause to admire the dawn and Aole ministers to the wounded, Elizabeth Chatterly looks to Yggsburgh's grey walls, then back to the adventurers.
ReplyDelete"I... When we enter Yggsburgh, I would prefer that you did not speak of the condition in which you found myself. I have a reputation in Yggsburgh Society to maintain."
OOC: In order to be fair to the players, I'm going to allow the PCs reduced to negative hp but now healed back to positive, and rested overnight, to be functional again, rather than requiring a full week of rest. Corak could pray now for additional clw spells if desired.
