Smon: test
5:08pm  2013-8-16 chris107 Has entered the room
chris107: Persecution of Evil. Although he is unaware of it his elven heritage has bred true. He has the Faeries hatred of evil and will stop at nothing to free the innocent from it's clutches.
Smon: Hi chris
Smon: I don't seem to have anything before "Persecution of Evil" - can you resend?
chris107: Hi Simon
chris107: No problem
chris107: No problem
chris107: Character goals -
chris107: Chivalry, Battle Glory, Personal Feats.
chris107: + persecution of Evil
Smon: thx
chris107: Hit points roll?
Smon: OK to roll your hp now, yup
chris107 rolls 2d10+2 and gets: 7, 6, (+2) = 15
chris107: +11 = 26
Smon: Nice roll
chris107: Very happy with that
chris107: I take it he just has his 2H Sword with him at the moment?
Smon: You have your bow.
chris107: The bow was more for hunting than warfare...
Smon: OK you can have left it behind if you prefer
Smon: I've noted your hp total & goals, anything else?
chris107: He probably thinks only the peasantry would actually use a distance weapon in combat.
Smon: Hear hear
Smon: Sir Hugh agreed with you on that one.
chris107: Thanks. He's a pretty simple soul. Well bred and chivalrous
chris107: Thanks. He's a pretty simple soul. Well bred and chivalrous
chris107: Thanks. He's a pretty simple soul. Well bred and chivalrous
chris107: Thanks. He's a pretty simple soul. Well bred and chivalrous
chris107: Now if one were hunting Dragons, well then a hunting bow would be just fine. A lance or sword would be better of course but the wretched things keep flying away!
chris107: I'll just grab a sandwich and hopefully Cousin Garrick will be here by then
Smon: ok
5:21pm  2013-8-16 Goonergeezer Has entered the room
Goonergeezer: heya, 6:30 start isnt it?
Smon: hi ken
Smon: yup
Smon: reading a gamebook to my 6 yr old right now
Goonergeezer: might be a few mins late just finishing stuff up here
Smon: ok
chris107: Hi Ken
Smon: ok I think I'm ok to play
Smon: Got Ivanhoe cartoon DVD on, distracting the critter
chris107: Any word from Graham?
Smon: I haven't seen anything
chris107: (Best to start 'em young on the chivalry trail, Ivanhoe cartoons sound just the ticket)
Smon:
Goonergeezer: ok just fethcjing my coffee 1 min and im with you
Goonergeezer: back
chris107: "Ah! Cousin Garrick!"
chris107: "Has Auntie Tabitha had you sit for her tapestry yet?"
Goonergeezer: "I fear auntie tabuitha may get the ugliest person alive to sit in my stead, i am not one of her favorites"
chris107: ":("
Smon: GM: So, you're on the boat discussing what to do about Beverly Arleigh. Last thing I posted: "Sir Hugh looks to Cadwal and sighs, then to Sir Garrick and nods. "Aye. Taking her could save hundreds of lives - Herdley and Kallent both. Even if Melchet cares naught for her - for he is by all accounts an evil man - her wellbeing could for instance give him an excuse to surrender to us with honour, if he sees that Herdley's situation is hopeless. And if we can subdue Herdley with ease, that may then deter Dunfalcon from warring against us... Then thousands of good Kallent folk would have cause to thank us.""
Goonergeezer: (Do w4e have ant spare chains and masks?)
chris107: Cadwel looks slightly disappointed by the thought of 'no war'.
chris107: But is cheered that the peasantry will be spared.
Smon: (You have 3 sets of chains & masks, currently they are on Varuna, Lisa & Cheryle)
Goonergeezer: seeing his nephew suddenly look downhearted, "Fear not, i am sure we can send you on a number of secret missions into enemy terrortory"
chris107: Cadwel cheers noticably at the prospect.
Smon: The other barge has disappeared round the bend.
chris107: "Though secret does seem rather underhand..."
Goonergeezer: ina a whuisper to Hugh and Cadwell " we may have to tie the ladt arghleigh's hands with rope and use a mask upon her, i fear her face may be known by any guards at the bridge"
chris107: "Poor Lady Arleigh's jewls "
Smon: Hugh nods to Garrick.
Goonergeezer: g to lana "If we were to leave now do tyou think there may be a chance we can get through while they are taking care of the other boat?"
chris107: "Nay cousin, we can not treat a gentle lady so surly?"
Goonergeezer: "oif the guards recognise her then we will surely be boarded and searched and we cannot akllow that"
chris107: "Can we not take her parole to remain below decks?"
Smon: Garrick calls Lana over and questions her. Lana: "That boat was just drifting - if we leave now we might still catch it before it reaches Earlshurst."
Goonergeezer: "we can, but Sir Hugh can you escort the lady below decks and make sure she raises no alarm or sound?"
chris107: (OOC it does seem a shame for her ladyships jewl chest to just float away)
Goonergeezer: "ok let us depart immediatly, sir hugh below with the women please, cadwell get on a pole with me lana you on the tiller, and do the talkikng if we gert toi ht ebride please"
Smon: Hugh: "She must have floored that Dunfalcon soldier... I'd much rather bind and hood her. I can use Lisa's gear."
Smon: Hugh: "She won't go quiet through Earlshurst..."
Goonergeezer: "then do so Sir Hugh, let us make haste, Heave to and all that"
Smon: Hugh nods and turns to Beverly: "Come with me please, milady." He escorts Beverly below decks as the rest of the crew get to work pushing off.
chris107: Cadwel defers to the senior knights but looks disappointed.
chris107: He heaves to like a gud'un though.
Smon: Lana, Garrick., Cadwal and Shade get the boat pushed off and heading downstream, when you hear a yelp from belowdecks as Sir Hugh seizes the enemy noblewoman.
Smon: You take the boat round the next bend, and can see the smokes of Earlhurst ahead, a half mile off. Then you spot the other boat ahead, on the right bank of the river.
chris107: Cadwel points excitedly
Goonergeezer: "Lana can you take us alongside so we can board?"
Goonergeezer: "Lana can you take us alongside so we can board?"
Goonergeezer: "Lana can you take us alongside so we can board?"
Goonergeezer: "Lana can you take us alongside so we can board?"
Goonergeezer: "Lana can you take us alongside so we can board?"
Smon: It looks to be docked, the rear mooring rope tied to a tree.
Goonergeezer: "Cadwell, you and shade board her and look for the jewelery, make haste though"
chris107: "No doubt the Dunfalcon scoundrel has fled with her ladyships jewls!"
Smon: Lana nods and steers you towards the other boat. There's no sign of life on the other boat, you can see the bodies you saw before. Sir Hugh comes up on deck and nods to Garrick. "She's hooded and bound, with Lisa sitting on her."
chris107: (@Simon - Is Cadwel in armour?)
Smon: You reach the other boat and can tie yours to it, docking. (You are in armour yup)
Goonergeezer: "Check quickly, i want you in and out in 2 minutes, then onto the bridge and home"
chris107: Is there any sign of some one having left the boat? Bloody footprints, gang plank etc.
Smon: The other boat is insecurely docked to the riverbank, the prow drifting back and forth in the stream.
chris107: (Thanks)
Smon: Cadwal and Shade clamber aboard. They see the gangplank is down.
Smon: /roll 1d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 3,
chris107: Showing blatent disregard for plate mail's ability to float Cadwel will leap to investigate.
Smon: There's a drop of blood on the gangplank.
chris107: Like a blood hound he's onto the scoundrels trail!
Smon: Cadwal is aboard the boat with Shade, who looks downstairs for the jewel chest, but comes up empty handed.
Smon: Cadwal heads down the gangplank, which shifts unsteadily underfoot.
Smon: He sees muddy footprints - someone headed from the boat, into the bushes.
Smon: Not long ago, it looks.
chris107: "The hunt is on cousin Garrick!"
chris107: he thunders and rattles off in persuit.
Smon: Cadwal pushes through the bushes, there is a copse of trees and then meadows in the distance.
Goonergeezer: "Go and make haste, hugh go with them, i will stay here with lana and our cargo, be quick"
chris107: Clanking along reaching for his sword to do war upon the miscreant thief.
Smon: Sir Hugh nods and heads after Cadwal, hefting his sword.
chris107: (As a seasoned hunter making sure his quarry hasn't doubled back or gone to ground)
chris107: He scans the horizon for the Dunfalcon robber.#
Smon: Cadwal's hunt does not last long - reaching the last trees before the meadow, he finds the tawny haired Dunfalcon soldier lying slumped seated against a yew tree, eyes shut and cradling a darkwood jewelry case.
chris107: "You sir! Surrender!"
Smon: The man is still breathing, but appears unconscious. He barely stirs at Cadwal's yell.
chris107: He pokes the chap with the pointy end of his BIG sword.
Smon: The soldier groans at the poke, eyes open blearily. "Whuh?"
chris107: "Surrender thief I say!"
Smon: Cadwal can hear Sir Hugh crashing through the bushes behind him, nearer the river. Several sheep graze in the meadow.
chris107: "I will take your parole"
chris107: C hails Sir Hugh
Smon: The soldier fixes eyes on Cadwal, and speaks "Orpheus Black, Lieutenant, Dunfalcon Light Infantry. Who're you? Herdley?"
Smon: Sir Hugh comes up, eyeing the open meadows ahead. He nods to Cadwal. "Got him, I see."
chris107: "I am Cawal Fortescue Sir, do you yield?"
chris107: (OOC Cadwal pronounced Cad'l)
chris107: "Sir Hugh, would you do the honour of recovering the ladies jewls?"
Smon: The soldier coughs. "Gaa... Don't feel like I'm in any condition to fight. Whose side am I yielding to? Odric?"
Smon: Hugh steps forward and prises the jewel case away from Lt Black.
chris107: C spits at the mention of the foul cleric's name.
Smon: Lt Black rubs his blood-crusted pate. "She hit me, didn't she? The Herdley bitch?" He grins ruefully. "Never turn your back on a Herdley, they say..."
chris107: "You have yielded to Knights loyal to the Kallants."
Smon: Hugh nods. "Aye."
Smon: The Dunfalcon soldier's eyes brighten. "Kallent? We're not at war with you, are we?"
chris107: "Do we take him with us Sir Hugh?"
Smon: Sir Hugh shrugs. "I don't see he's of value to us... But like he says, we're not at war with him, either. We could leave him?"
chris107: C offers a water skin and some bandages for the soldiers head.
Smon: Lt Orpheus nods gratefully and takes the water and bandages.
chris107: "Are you fit to be left here sir?"
Smon: Orpheus: "Heh... I'll probably survive... Unless someone less friendly finds me."
chris107: "Then Sir Hugh we must make haste and return to our duty. You sir I wish good luck and God's speed."
Smon: Orpheus nods happily at the benediction. "And good luck to you too. And thanks for not skewering me."
chris107: (C leaves the water skin along with some dry rations for the fellow.)
Smon: He drinks some more water and thanks Cadwal for the dry biscuit.
chris107: C nods and smiles warmly then heads back with Sir Hugh and the chest
Smon: Sir Hugh nods to Cadwal and heads back to the boat, carrying the chest.
Smon: Hugh & Cadwal rejoin Garrick Lana and Shade on deck.
chris107: (C doesn't really understand politics....)
Smon: Sir Hugh: "Sir Garrick, we recovered the treasure. The Dunfalcon soldier won't trouble us further."
Smon: (:D)
Smon:
Goonergeezer: "Ah! it is good to see you back unharmed, and with the chest, stow it away and let us depart, i grow tired of this county"
chris107: "Yes we must complete our duty to bring the errant Countess to justice."
chris107: "Just a shame we can't have a bash at the Herdley knaves"
Smon: Lana: "We're going to talk our way through, after all?"
chris107: C looks hopefully at Sir Hugh
chris107: (Rather like a fierce Spaniel)
Goonergeezer: "i think it is the safest option, i would not want to be on deck if it is raining arrows down upoin us"
Smon: Sir Hugh is inspecting the jewelry chest, which is locked. He produces a key. "Found this in her underwear..."
Smon: He looks up. "What?"]
chris107: "Nay cousin! What could the arrows of peasants trouble true hearts like ours?"
Goonergeezer: "perhaps we may be able to use the other boat as a diversion, eithrer by setting it on fire or telling the bridge guards about an abandoned boat with dead soldiers"
chris107: C nods desolately, realizing there is unlikely to be any sport.
Goonergeezer: "lana which do you think they would more likely go to investigate quicker?"
Smon: Lana scratches her blonde head. "Um... Well they'd probably send men upriver to check out a boat with dead soldiers, but probably not the same men that guard the gate?"
Goonergeezer: "let us leave the boat as it is then and report it to the bridge, hopefully that will steer their minds away from us"
chris107: "Cousin Garrick..." Wheedles C
Smon: "If we're talking our way past we want everything to seem normal, but they might already have heard about fighting upriver. The good thing is, going downstream at least we have a chance to run the bridge if they turn nasty."
Goonergeezer: we must be prepared for that eventuality"
chris107: "Are we not at war with the Herdleymen? Isn't it our duty to ... well inconvenience them?"
Smon: Sir Hugh nods to Garrick. "I think your plan is sound."
Smon: Hugh to Cadwal: "Stealing their Countess and Melchet's daughter is quite inconvenience enough, in my book. And Garrick is sore wounded, remember."
Smon: Hugh: "Talking of which, in the worst case we can use the women as hostages."
chris107: "Ah forgive me cousin, I had't thought of your wounds."
chris107: "Nay Sir Hugh, even without my gallant reletive surely you and I could best this mere score or so of villains?"
Smon: Hugh looks at Cadwal, and sighs again, resignedly. Lana: "The bad news is, to talk our way past we'll need at least three of us on deck as deckhands - no plate armour. Myself, Shade... and one of you."
Smon: Hugh shrugs. "I'll do it."
chris107: C will offer
Goonergeezer: "Sir hugh, would you do the honours, i will remain below decks with the prisoners"
Smon: Sir Hugh: "What, Cadwal? You'd rather I guard naked women belowdecks than bear my breast to the Herdley?!"
chris107: "Nay Sir Hugh! Your honour is above reproach I meerly me......" C trails off lamely
Smon: Hugh grins warmly at Cadwal, and nods to Garrick. "Aye." He begins removing his armour. "Cadwal, Garrick, you go below now."
Goonergeezer: Garrick heads below with cadwal to the prisoners
chris107: C will keep his armour on and sword at the ready hoping really hard that he needs to use it but fretting about Sir Hugh unarmoured and in danger above.
Smon: Below in the dim, sleeping-roll strewn hold, Lisa and Cheryle are guarding the black-hooded forms of the two captive Herdley women, kneeling with wrists tied behind their backs. Cheryle is holding the dagger. Lisa smiles at Garrick. wri
Smon: Lana comes down briefly to drop off Hugh's armour, and nods to Garrick. "We're approaching the bridge. Here goes..." She looks nervous.
Goonergeezer: "Lisa, cheryl, we approach the bridge now, be ready and pray to the lord for luck"
chris107: C does the fingers crossed sign
Smon: The two slave-girls nod and mutter their own strange prayers, as Lana Greenvale goes back above.
Smon: From the hold you can hear through the door to the deck above - the sentry's voice call out, and Lana respond. "...Fighting upriver... A boat stranded... dead soldiers."
Smon: /roll 1d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 5,
Smon:
Smon: You hear a thump as someone hits the deck - comes onboard. Then voices: "Gotta check for Herdley infiltrators, Lana. We heard they took Etting last night..."
Smon: You hear a single pair of footsteps approach the door to the hold. What are Garrick and Cadwal doing?
Smon: Lana: "We have a couple mercs guarding the slaves - high value merchandise..."
chris107: Cadwel slips in front of the 'slaves'
chris107: Resting casually on his great blade.
Smon: Cheryle puts the dagger she's holding behind her, still kneeling beside Varuna, with Lisa on the other side beside Cheryle. Only the Herdley captives are hooded and bound (you have 1 spare set of manacles & hood)
Goonergeezer: garrick keeps his blade sheathed and awaits for the guards to come below, he is standing just to the side of the slaves and is twirling lisas hair around his fingers mumbling intpo her ear
Smon: The door handle turns and you see a single sturdy Herdleyman silhouetted in the light, Lana behind him. He's wearing splintmail. He scans the hold, eyes adjusting to the dimness, and descends the short flight of stairs.
Smon: He has a sword at his belt.
chris107: C nods.
Goonergeezer: "hail brother"
Smon: The soldier nods back to Cadwal, looks over the two warriors (relieved it's only two, not a Dunfalcon assault platoon!) and the naked women. "Whew... got some beauties there! Why're just those two hooded and bound?"
chris107: "They're the mouthy ones..."
Smon: Lisa is looking happy at Garrick's attentions, eyes half closed. "mmm..."
Goonergeezer: "troublesome wenches, Damn near ttok an eye out when we were picking them up, bound them so there is no trouble, Not like these beautoies?"
Smon: The soldier nods. "So, these two are the good girls, eh?" He grins, indicating Cheryle and Lisa.
Goonergeezer: "Aye, trouble is we cant do anything, it will cause the price to fall too much"
chris107: "And I fear the pox may be upon them..."
chris107: Teases C
Smon: The soldier nods and sighs. "Poxy, eh? They don't look too raddled." Soldier: "Where are you taking them?" Lana interjects quickly: "Upriver to Higgleback. The Aldrun like a pretty girl. Like the Kallent..."
Goonergeezer: garrick laughs "my cousin here fears every girl has the pox, he caught it once, made him a bit nervous"
Smon: The soldier grins at Cadwal, pushing his helmet back from a grimy forehead. "Heh! Too much time in cheap brothels, my friend! You want a good honest girl, like my Wanda! Though if I had your duty, dunno if I could stay faithful!"
chris107: "It's a burden" agrees C ruefully
Goonergeezer: "the love of a good woman is what we all need, its the action of the dirty ones we all want"
Smon: He pokes at Varuna gently with his toe, then at Beverly. "Well, all seems in order..." You hear a plaintive "mmfff!" from Beverly Arleigh.
Smon: (must go, 30 mins)
Smon: (maybe 45)
Goonergeezer: (k)
chris107: No problem, I'll keep a look out for you.
chris107: I'll check back 20:30
Goonergeezer: (seems to be going to plan so far:) )
chris107: (Yup, just got to slip past and we're home free with the gems, the damsels and plenty of fame)
chris107: (Then we can start looking for things to chop up with our two handed swords!)
Goonergeezer: (yep get home, and then kill things)
Goonergeezer: (i think the earl is sending more troops to bacvk up edward, by river seems quickest, so maybe come back this way and take the bridge, it seems fairly important to the river trade and for supplies)
Goonergeezer: (hold the bridge, control the river)#
chris107: (Sounds good to me but young cadwal has visions of slaying horrid dragons and wicked giants not the Herdley peasantry.)
chris107: (He's proficient with heavy lance, that should tell you all you need to know )
Goonergeezer: (we do have a drgon in kallent, we make sacrifices to it so it will elave us alone)
chris107: (Oh that's tempting, heavy lance charging a dragon 6-36HP!)
chris107: (Then 3-18 with 2 hander)
Goonergeezer: (one of simons live games tried it, i believe they got slaughtered
chris107: (C knows no fear. he's very young....)
chris107: (And read too many comics as a boy)
Goonergeezer: (G knows fear all too well)
chris107: (Haha )
chris107: (Dragon slaying should be at the top of every good Knights shopping list)
Goonergeezer: (i would like to have a crack at the dragon but after all the troubles have been sorted out and G has children to carry on the line"
chris107: (Now C knows about the dragon he won't be able to sleep)
Goonergeezer: (i seem to think that its an old or ancient dragon!!!!)
chris107: (Even more fame!!!!)
Goonergeezer: (even bigger breath weapon)
chris107: (Though maybe a few levels will be helpful first)
chris107: (And a heavy war horse, or better still a Pagasus.... Well you can dream)
Goonergeezer: (a couple of magical 2 handers, and a good cleric and mage)
Goonergeezer: (o yes, i nearly forgot, about 200 foottroops as well)
chris107: (Too many to share the glory with. )
chris107: (Nobody will remember the brave dragonslayers Garrick & Cadwal if some sneaky wizard lightning bolts it from the sky. Or worse still Fred, Bill and Charlie, peasant xbow men fill it full of holes)
Goonergeezer: "the nobility write the histories, and we are noble)
chris107: (But we'd know....)
chris107: (C is intrincictly Noble)
chris107: (And not too bright )
Goonergeezer: (wellif we do end up at war, i want to start up a band of knights to harry the enemy supply lines and such, pleanty of glory and killing there for you )
chris107: (Supply lines, that's just peasants with donkys. C want to be on a charger knocking other nobles out of their saddles )
Goonergeezer: (once we stop a few supply wagons then they will start escorting them, and the more we stop the bigger the escorts)
chris107: (Still just soldiers though. No self respecting Knight would ride with the baggage...)
chris107: (I fear Cousin G is showing his proletariat roots! )
Goonergeezer: (it all depends on the baggage tho)
Goonergeezer: (our baggage here is very valuble)
chris107: (C is oblivious to political or financial gain, he was born with a silver spoon so the harsh truths kind of past him by)
chris107: (He just thinks it's mean to keep these ladies all tied up 'n stuff)
Smon: back (hopefully) just catching up
Smon: >>(we do have a drgon in kallent, we make sacrifices to it so it will elave us alone)<< I think that's Black Fang you're thinking of, it lives above the Hawkes vinyards on Serpent Ridge near Yggsburgh. There was a red dragon in Kallent but it was killed by Kal, who founded Kallent.
Smon: It's on the Kallent insignia
chris107: C makes a mark on his map and a mental note that Black fang will fall to his lance one day
Smon: >>(one of simons live games tried it, i believe they got slaughtered<< Well they actually ambushed it and drove it off initially. Problem was they decided to track it down to finish it - it ambushed them and slaughtered them, the Thief snuck away while the rest died.
Goonergeezer: (just making a coffee, Once we have invaded all the other counties and have them all under the heel of our boot, then we will not need to have noble women bound and gagged)
Smon: Black Fang is just an adult black dragon, feel free to have a go.
chris107: I'll grab a quick drink before we get started.
Smon: Although I think Sir Ulrich likes having a dragon on retainer for 1 sheep per week.
chris107: The foul creature must die (once there's a couple of levels under the belt)!
Smon: >>He pokes at Varuna gently with his toe, then at Beverly. "Well, all seems in order..." You hear a plaintive "mmfff!" from Beverly Arleigh.<< Beverly struggles ineffectually against her bonds, further incoherent noises issuing from her hood. A moment later Countess Varuna does the same, starting to rise to her feet, though still hooded with her hands behind her. The Herdley soldier watches in surprise.
chris107: "I told you these two were trouble"
Smon: Soldier: "Hey, what..."
Smon: /roll 1d6
chris107: "No bruises cousin"
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 4,
Smon: Garrick & Cadwal roll init, you win on a tie (4)
Goonergeezer: garrick grabs hold of the rising figure and hauls her to the ground then backhands her acroiss the face
chris107: You want to roll Ken?
Goonergeezer rolls 1d6 and gets: 2,
Smon: you can both roll
Smon: Lisa:
Smon: /roll 1d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 3,
chris107 rolls 1d6 and gets: 2,
Smon: bad luck - Before you can grab her she throws herself in the direction of the soldier.
Smon: "*MMMMFFF!!!"
Smon: /roll 1d20
Smon rolls 1d20 and gets: 14,
Smon: She bowls into his arms, he catches her, surprised. "What's up with this one?!"
Smon: (Garrick can grab her now if you want)
Goonergeezer: garrick grabs hold of the one in the soldiers arms "this is the bitch who nearly had an eye out
chris107: "Doesn't fancy the life of a concubine, much rather a proper man like you obviously"
Goonergeezer: "a feisty one, to be sure"
Smon: "MMMFFF!!! MFFF!!" Make a CHA check Garrick, d20 roll under, at +2 to stat.
Smon: (+3 for Cadwal's addition)
Goonergeezer rolls 1d20 and gets: 17,
Goonergeezer: fail
chris107:
Goonergeezer: at +2 i am 14
Goonergeezer: with cadwals +3 also its a success
Goonergeezer: just
Smon: Garrick grabs her, the soldier is still holding her. "Wish I could afford her..." he says sadly.
Smon: (brb 5 min)
chris107: (This is when we need C on deck and Shade here below1)
Goonergeezer: (i think we are ok)
chris107: (You heard anything from Graham Ken?)
Goonergeezer: (nope
chris107: (I'll send out a PM for Redstar over the weekend, see who's still game)
Smon: (sorry more than 5 min)
chris107: No bother
Goonergeezer: no worries
Smon: The soldier lets Garrick take Varuna, cuff her, and plonk her back down firmly. Still shaking his head he heads back on deck, speaking to Lana Greenvale.
chris107: (Phew!)
Smon: "Damn lucky you missed the Dunfalcon, Lana... Hope we have your luck here!" He says ruefully. Lana has brought the ship into the riverbank beside the bridge, and the guard is able to take a ladder back up. Once he's off the ship Lana waves the Herdleymen goodbye and she, Hugh & Shade punt the boat under the bridge and downriver towards the safety of the broad Nemo.
Goonergeezer: once they are back on deck garrick whispers to the lady varuna and arleigh "Try anything like that again and you will be sorry, please do not test my patience"
Smon: The Herdley women have lapsed into sullen silence.
Smon: Cheryle takes up her hidden dagger and pricks the point to Varuna's throat. "I wouldn't mind slitting your neck wide open, honey." Varuna shivers.
Smon: Punting on, you leave Earlshurt behind; Lana has Hugh and Shade help her raise the mast and unfurl the main sail.
chris107: C will poke his head out and whisper if it's okay to come topside?
Smon: Lana nods to Cadwal. "Come on up!" She grins, very relieved. An hour after leaving the bridge, you come out into the sparkling waters of the Nemo around 5pm, the late afternoon sun dazzling on the river.
chris107: C enjoys the fresh air and watches the scenery goby.
Smon: OOC: You pretty much played that perfectly by the way. Your initial plan to talk your way past had the problem of the war going on upstream, which Earlshurst did know about. Being able to point to the other boat made you a lot more credible.
Smon: The prevailing westerly wind now works in your favour as you begin to head upstream along the Nemo, but you've only gone a couple miles and left the village of Gibbet's corner behind on the east bank, when the sun sets.
Smon: As dusk is falling, you scan the banks for a good place to stop the night (you're 2 hexes upriver from Gibbet's corner on this map - https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjCeUC58hCydTu0XZ6jCBbshIRm-prYBsA_NYsLAJq499sqiz22MEVML66B4BcHvfcNuNqKXGEwTgA3KbtukwIOmVGyg5JbbkYs1IEyCtNTnYKUkcvHA-5FdiOxtP5NsLey2K6RvSiaMhe/s1600/Herdley.bmp )
Goonergeezer: g to klana "is it safe to travel in thre night? should we set a watch on the prow if we do?"
Goonergeezer: g to klana "is it safe to travel in thre night? should we set a watch on the prow if we do?"
Goonergeezer: g to klana "is it safe to travel in thre night? should we set a watch on the prow if we do?"
Goonergeezer: g to klana "is it safe to travel in thre night? should we set a watch on the prow if we do?"
Smon: Lana: "With enough crew we could sail upriver all night, aye. But I need to sleep..."
Goonergeezer: (too close to Hareboro for my liking)
chris107: Looks like we're sailing into friendlier waters
Smon: Lana: "We're still fresh now though - could do a few more hours if you're up for it?"
Goonergeezer: "a few more hours, i want to put as much distance between us and any posivle pursuit as possible"
chris107: C will muck in with helping where he can.
Smon: Lana nods. "Fair enough. We'll need to stay a bit further out to be safe in the dark - faster current means slower journey, but we can add a few miles..."
Smon: /roll 1d10
Smon rolls 1d10 and gets: 8,
Smon: You sail on. A large merchant barge slips past some distance away, heading downstream.
chris107: "Is there a bridge over the river on the road from Harboro and Villiers Cross?"
chris107: "Will it likely be guarded?"
Smon: Lana grins: "No bridges on the Nemo until you reach Yggsburgh!"
Smon: (It's a big river)
chris107: "Oh, well that's good then" smiles C
Smon: (on the map bridges are shown with the road-brown over the river blue.)
chris107: (Got you)
chris107: "Is there a ferry crossing then?"
Smon: Lana nods "Yes, there's a ferry wharf, both sides". You've gone another mile or so upriver and dusk is turning to full night, you're about a mile downriver from the Viliers Cross ferry point, when Lana points out another brightly-coloured river barge nestled in rushes on the east (Hareboro) bank.
Smon: There's no movement or light from it, it's low in the water and something about it doesn't look right.
chris107: (Any sign of torches or such at either ferry point?)
Smon: It's about 150' away from you.
Smon: /roll 1d6
Smon rolls 1d6 and gets: 6,
Goonergeezer: (does it resemble the craft that attacked us before?)
Smon: You don't see any torches ahead. The barge doesn't look like the low, fast boat that chased you before, but Lana seems to recognise it despite the gloom. Lana: "I... I think that's Arshan's boat... my brother."
Smon: It has a slightly derelict air as it bobs in the water.
chris107: "We must investigate then Miss Greenvale."
Smon: Lana nods to Cadwal. "Thanks."
chris107: Can C light a torch?
Smon: She steers your barge towards the other. As you get closer Cadwal lights a torch; in the light you see the dark shapes of rats scurrying across the deck - the dark-stained deck...
chris107: (Or perhaps shade could hold it while he hefts his sword? Just in case)
Smon: Lana looks pale and tense. "Sir Garrick, Sir Hugh, you better get up here..."
chris107: "can you get close enough to drop a gang plank over madame?"
Smon: Your boat draws alongside. The rats have vanished.
Smon: Lana nods, hooking the boat in closer; Cadwal is able to get the gangplank over.
chris107: (If he got someone to hold the torch he'll go onboard, sword at the ready)
Smon: The other knights are on deck now. In the light from Cadwal's torch the dark stains gleam red-brown.
Goonergeezer: Garrick heads to the deck handaxe in hand and scans the deck of the other boat for movement
Smon: Shade takes the torch, Lana secures the boats by mooring rope as Garrick and Cadwal clamber aboard.
Smon: You're in bullrushes on the east shore of the Nemo, close to Hareboro - Odric's old heartland.
chris107: Cawal shouts quietly "Arshan, Arshan!"
Smon: On the derelict boat there's no sign of life. Cadwal calls out, but the only reponse is the creaking of the open door to the hold.
Smon: You become aware of a foul stench...
Smon: brb
chris107: (Not looking good...)
chris107: "We need light cousin Garrick..."
chris107: "We need light cousin Garrick..."
chris107: "We need light cousin Garrick..."
chris107: (C inspects the doorway and thinking about the size of their own vessel does a calculation as to if he'll be able to use his big sword)
Goonergeezer: g to lana "pass a torch, we ned to go below decks, it does not look good thpough"
Goonergeezer: garrick will change to his longsword also
chris107: "And a spear if there's one on board please "
Smon: Lana clambers on board with torch and club. "I don't have a spear... got a dagger." she says grimly.
chris107: C thanks her and takes the dagger.
Smon: You could use 2-h swords if the hold was as empty as your own; not if it was filled up.
chris107: (Best to keep it in his belt incase he needs it.)
Smon: Hugh is still on your ship: "Garrick! If there's danger you should stay back. Let me go... " He heads for the gangplank.
Goonergeezer: "aye, thank you hugh, Damn these wounds"
Smon: Hugh clambers aboard too, leaving just Shade on Lana's boat.
Goonergeezer: Garrick swaps places with Sir Hugh
chris107: c WILL GO UP FRONT, HEADING DOWN INTO THE HOLD...
chris107: oops caps lock...
Smon: Lana: "The stench... bodies. It's coming from the hold..." She gestures towards the semi-open door as Cadwal moves past her.
chris107: Big sword pointing ahead of him, dagger in his belt for easy access if needed.
Smon: Cadwal throws the door wide. Behind him the light from Lana's torch casts its gleam on a scene of horror - men's bodies, slaughtered and multilated. And in the shadows, something hunched is lurking...
chris107: (Room to swing his sword?)
chris107: If so he will challange it and advance upon it.
Smon: With a hideous gibbering, the creature moves into the light - grey, foul, once-human... a feeder on human flesh... a ghoul.
Smon: Cadwal moves forward down the stairs, gaining room to swing his sword as it advances on him... roll init.

Goonergeezer: (bugger)
Goonergeezer: (do we have any more knights on our boat?)
Smon: (it'll take her 6 minutes to bleed out, can be stabilised if you can take a minute)
Smon: (just Shade)
Goonergeezer: garrick will attempt to stabilize lana this round
Goonergeezer: In a loud voice "Shade quickly, we need help["

Smon: Garrick's shining blade cleaves the foul beast's head from its shoulders!
chris107:
Smon: Garrick stands victorious among his paralysed and bleeding comrades. Shade kneels to stabilise Lana at -6.
Goonergeezer: seeing the beast fall garrick quickly turns his attention back to Lana and tries to stop the bleeding "shade help me quickly"
Smon: Lana's eyes blink open as she sees Garrick over her. She sighs and smiles. "aah..."
Smon: (lucky! Nearly TPK time!)
chris107: I thought it was going to be TPK there.
Goonergeezer: (i nearly ran, the greater good of Kallent and all that)

chris107: Her brother?
Smon: The bodies are badly mutilated, faces and eyes chewed away.
chris107: "Bravely done cousin Garrick!"
Smon: There are four corpses, a typical crew tally for one of these boats.
chris107: (No recognizable tatoos or jewelry?)
Smon: Shade goes to check on the slave girls while Sir Hugh gets up. Cadwal finds various tattoos on the boatmen, though Lana has none.
Smon: Hugh: "Urgh... Lana, you have to leave the fighting to we with steel on our chests!"
chris107: He will take note of these for identification at a later date..
Smon: Lana nods to Hugh, looking pale as death. "Arshan... Look for a tattooo... heart cleft with axe... left shoulder."
Smon: Cadwal can see this tattoo on the corpse right in front of him.
chris107: As gently as he can he will break the sad news...
Smon: Lana nods. "At least he's not.... wasn't... that thing. Odric's work, perhaps?"
Smon: She's slipping back into unconsciousness.
chris107: "It seems that even from beyond the grave Odric can cause harm..."
Smon: Hugh: "There are sword marks on these bodies...." Cadwal spots a broken off quarrel in one. Hugh: "Killed by raiders then dumped here?"
chris107: "I fear this vessel must become their funeral pyre my friends"
Smon: Hugh: "Burn it? Could be seen a mile off or more."
chris107: "Do we have time to give a decent burial Hugh?"
chris107: "We can hardly leave brave Lana's brother to rot here..."
chris107: "Or maybe to attract more of those foul creatures..."
Smon: Hugh shrugs. "I don't know what bargee custom is. Burning sounds like a good way..." He looks at the ghoul and grimaces. "I don't want them coming back."
Goonergeezer: "perhaps if we were to weigh theodies down ands give them a burial at sea, or river at least
Smon: Hugh nods. "aye, there's ballast in the hold, under the boards."
Goonergeezer: "how about we scupper the craft?"
chris107: C will do what's needed....
chris107: (OOC tow it with us?)
chris107: (OOC it's sale may help Lana)
Goonergeezer: (i think that would need a lot more crew)
Smon: GM: You wrap the bodies, weigh them down, and with a few words of prayer slide them overboard.
Smon: Hugh: "We have a problem now. Lana was the only one who knows how to sail this damn boat..."
Smon: GM: Think I'll leave it there for tonight so you can plan you next move.
chris107: Haha was just typing something to that effect
chris107: Cheers Simon, cheers Ken
Goonergeezer: "since we are going downriver maybe all we need to do is let the current take it and just pole ourselves away from the banks if we get too close

Smon: Unless you want to go to Dunfalcon
Goonergeezer: ok, tyvm for the game chaps
Goonergeezer: (ah well that buggers that idea up then lol)
chris107: Thanks but I'll pass on Dunfalcon
Smon: You're near Hareboro and Lysana Arleigh-Wright who Garrick has a history with.
chris107: Maybe see you Tuesday night Ken?
Smon: Right in Odric country.
Goonergeezer: yep, im good for tuesday chris
Smon: Next game Wednesday - looks like there'll be lots of interruptions I'm afraid.
chris107: Cadwal sure has a healthier respect for the undead now..
Smon: (Basically between 6.30pm & 10pm I'm on call!)
chris107: Wednesday's good for me too.
Goonergeezer: not a problem, i will have interruptions here also, i have a house full of children
Smon: Ghouls are terrible!
Smon: When the dice went against you I thought you'd had it, or else Garrick would flee, the lone survivor.
chris107: Until next time then, I'll wish you both good night.
Smon: bye now
Goonergeezer: yep same for me, wed is good
Goonergeezer: night chris
Goonergeezer: nite simon

  1. Shade and Garrick get the injured Lana Greenvale safely back aboard your boat, while Sir Hugh and Cadwal shake off the lingering effects of the ghoul paralysis. You take ballast stones from the bilge and wrap the bodies for a river burial. Lana props herself up and says a few words in the old Norse tongue of her forebears, what sounds like a Crisasised version of a pagan prayer, then the bodies are consigned to the watery shallows. You take Lana below and make her comfortable in the small private cabin area she has at the back of the hold, and she soon lapses into sleep.
It’s now late at night and most of the crew are settling to fitful sleep, when Sir Hugh Orde asks to speak privately with Sir Garrick at the prow of the ship. Hugh has clearly been mulling something at length, he looks troubled, grim, and something else – ashamed?
    Sir Hugh:
“Garrick, I must make confession, but there is no priest here. An honourable knight like you must serve, instead.”
    Hugh pauses.
“What I say now, you must not tell Cadwal, he is young and innocent – I could not look him in the eye…”
Hugh gazes out across the dark waters and sighs, gripping the handrail hard.
“Earlier today, after Earlshurst, when we sailed north upon the Nemo, when you were all above and I was below, just me and the womenfolk… I sinned.”
Hugh’s jaw clenches as he grits his teeth, face dark.
“I copulated with the woman, Beverly Arleigh. More than once. Her body responded eagerly to my touch, but I know that I took her not as man and wife, but as master and slave. I know that this is a sin, worse than all the fornicating I have done before. And I fear the ghoul, brave Lana’s wounds – I fear they are a punishment sent by the Lord for my wrongdoing; that I have doomed us all.”
There is unaccustomed fear in Sir Hugh’s eyes. He looks down.
“I fear I am no better now than Sir Gregor Caskeham; that I have betrayed good Sir Edward’s trust. Perhaps I could marry Beverly Arleigh, redeem her virtue and my honour…”
    He trails off into silence.

"Hugh, I am glad you came to me with this, i will not berate you, nor will i tell you that you that you have commited a good deed, as a knight it is your duty to protect those who cannot defend theirselves and you have failed in that duty. You tell me that Lady Arleigh responded eagerly to you touch, did she know it was you?"

Garrick waits for conformation or denial and then continues

"Hugh, i do not wish you to dwell on what you have done, give me this night so i may think on these matters and pray for guidance, then do you solemnly swear to abide by my ruling on this matter? You are a good man Hugh, our lord tells us that all our sins will be forgiven if we truly repent, Go now and rest, i shall take this first watch"

Garrick will wait until his watch is over and will then go below deck and approach the Lady Arleigh and gently wake her.

      In a whispered voice

"My lady i wish to speak with you on urgent matters, I have heard of what has transpired earlier this day and i wish to know your feelings on this matter, Please speak freely and do not fear me, it is i who have taken you hostage and it is i who is responsible for your safety and well-being, i have failed in my duties and i promise you that i will do all within my power to make amends, and if you have been forced against your wishes......"
Garrick lets the sentence trail off and awaits Lady Arleigh's reply

      Hugh nods, eyes downcast.
      "Aye."

      Garrick:
      >>"Hugh, i do not wish you to dwell on what you have done, give me this night so i may think on these matters and pray for guidance, then do you solemnly swear to abide by my ruling on this matter?<<

      Hugh nods.
"Aye, Sir Garrick. I so swear. I'll tie on one of those loadstones and jump in the river if you tell me so."

      >> You are a good man Hugh, our lord tells us that all our sins will be forgiven if we truly repent, Go now and rest, i shall take this first watch"<<

Sir Hugh nods, looking relieved, but not speaking further as he turns and goes down to the hold to rest.

Some time after midnight (3/10/97) Garrick goes down to the muggy hold, lighting a candle he finds the naked forms of Beverly and Varuna lying close together on sleeping bags near the rear, flanked by the sleeping forms of Lisa and Cheryle; Cheryle still gripping Garrick's dagger beneath the rough blanket that drapes her. The two captives are still collared, hooded and gagged, but their wrists have been re-manacled in front of them so they can sleep comfortably - probably by Sir Hugh; Lisa and Cheryle seem unlikely to have shown them such kindness.

Garrick removes Beverly Arleigh's hood and gag, waking her. She coughs and blinks, regarding him with tear-reddened eyes.

      Garrick whispers:
      >>"My lady i wish to speak with you on urgent matters, I have heard of what has transpired earlier this day and i wish to know your feelings on this matter, Please speak freely and do not fear me, it is i who have taken you hostage and it is i who is responsible for your safety and well-being, i have failed in my duties and i promise you that i will do all within my power to make amends, and if you have been forced against your wishes......"
Garrick lets the sentence trail off and awaits Lady Arleigh's reply<<

Beverly darts a glance at Garrick and seems about to speak, but then her face flushes and she looks down, blushing.
After a long moment she does speak, in a low voice but bitter tone:

"If you truly have my well-being at heart then release me from these bonds and allow me to cover myself. Do not treat me as a slave. I am a noble lady of Herdley."

      Delete
  2. "Yes my lady, of course"
Garrick Drapes his cloak around the Bev's shoulders and pulls it close to cover her modesty
"you must understand that i did this only so as to fool the guards into thinking you were slaves and not our captives, I fear i cannot yet remove your manacles or ungag you while we journey in lands which could be considered dangerous to me and my men.......Unless, do you give me your word as a noble woman and do so swear upon your families name that you will not try to escape, nor will you make any attempt to contact or notify anyone of your presence and will accompany me on our journey to Kallent?......I can assure you that no man shall touch you without your consent in that way again, I am sorry to say that you were in the wrong place at the wrong time and are now too dangerous to us to be set free"

"As for Sir Hugh, he needs to be punished, but his deeds must go unmentioned so as you may not lose face, what happened will never be made public, i do not wish the shame upon you, Sir Hugh is a good man who has committed an evil act, as that act was against your person i ask you, what would you have done to him, whatever you say will be given due consideration"

    Beverly hesitates, then nods.

"I will agree, on my honour as an Arleigh. Free me and I will not try to escape again, nor contact nor notify anyone, and will accompany you to Kallent..."

Beverly Arleigh looks with half-lidded eyes over to where the Bear of Redditch, Sir Hugh Orde, sleeps fitfully, further forward in the Hold. She blushes.

    "He... he..."

Her auburn hair has fallen forward, shadowing her face, but then as she turns to Garrick she tosses her head, waving it back. She glares up at Garrick.

"In Herdley the punishment for ravishing a noble woman is always death."

"But yet you hesitate to speak of him and still blush at the sight of him, if i were to order him to wed you and punish him also, would that be acceptable on your part, what he has done cannot go unpunished, he admitted his wrongdoings to me and i could see that although he committed such an unspeakable act he has feelings towards you, am i wrong in thinking that you may also harbour some feeling for him despite his actions? whatever the outcome his punishment will not be carried out until we reach home, so will you think on this matter and let me know your feelings when we reach Kallent?"

Garrick looks for another cloak or material and drapes it over Varuna, Lisa and Cheryl then carefully picks his way through the bodies towards Shade and gives him a gentle shake

"My friend, wake up, we need you"

Garrick waits a few seconds for Shade to fully come awake

"We cannot continue by boat as we do not have the required amount of crew, we have to finish our journey overland, however Lana is incapable of continuing on foot and it would look suspicious us escorting our cargo overland, we need horses and possibly a wagon, normally i would suggest we attempt to barter with a local farmer, but i do not want to raise suspicion, nor do i want someone to awaken and find his cart and horses taken, do you understand what i am saying?"

Garrick waits for conformation from shade

"Take Sir Hugh with you if you feel it necessary, word of your deeds this morn cannot reach Cadwal, he is a troubled soul and i fear our actions would weigh heavily upon him, Make haste shade and may the lord be with you and may he forgive our actions"

Garrick heads towards the exit from the hold and wraps his cloak about his shoulders to keep out the early morning chill and to partially block the exit should anyone attempt to leave in the night

Beverly Arleigh nods, and lies back down, her hands still manacled in front of her but no longer hooded or gagged, and draped in Garrick's cloak.

    >>Garrick looks for another cloak or material and drapes it over Varuna, Lisa and Cheryl<<

GM: Lisa and Cheryle already have pulled sleeping blankets over themselves; there are plenty more in the Hold - Garrick drapes one over the Countess Varuna's naked and hooded form.

    >> then carefully picks his way through the bodies towards Shade and gives him a gentle shake

"My friend, wake up, we need you"<<

(tag Shade, or I'll play him tonight as necessary)

  8. Shade nods at Garrick's words.

    "Leave it to me."

Then he slopes off into the night and goes hunting for a cart and as many horses as they require. If anyone causes him trouble he will produce a blade, and do whatever it takes to get rid of them. If someone looks like they'll really be difficult he will attempt to sneak up on them and eliminate them that way - basically he'll choose the quickest, simplest avenue available. A practical man, if one lacking in conscience.

    1. NB Shade's original intro 1 year ago real time & game time, 24/9/96 YY:

      >>Smon: I'm thinking your PC could be an assassin from Yggsburgh, the big city to the north. Dame Lysana Arleigh-Wright wrote to her sister the merchant Candice Wright of Yggsburgh and asked for 'protection' - she sent you.<<

Shade worked for Lysana, who is a native of Yggsburgh, and helped Morganna Maple rescue the Kallent noblewoman Cassandra Starling from Odric's brigands. You are only a couple miles from Lysana's manor at Hareboro. Lysana has good reason to hate Baron Melchet Arleigh; the PCs Morgana Maple and co once saved her from being raped and branded by Melchet's degenerate son Lord Oscar - Melchet sent Oscar to forcibly marry her. Most likely she'd be happy to sell or give you a cart and oxen (or maybe a dray horse) if you asked, no murdering necessary.

    2. Admittedly you weren't able to do all that much to protect her, but it's the thought that counts, right?
