NPC Campaign Demographics

My NPC level demographics are generally about half AD&D standard, so eg a Fighter lord ruling a fortress IMC is typically 5th-6th level not 9th-12th, a typical Magic-User ruler is 6th-7th not 11th-14th, etc. This means that 5th-6th level is pretty much 'name level' in terms of general renown as a famous hero, ability to attract apprentices & followers, etc:
Cleric: At 4th can establish a place of worship with 20-200 followers. At 5th can construct a religious stronghold, attract warriors, & raise 9 sp/person/month in 15-30 mile radius.
Fighter: At 5th can establish a freehold, attract followers, and raise 7 sp/person/month in a 20-50 mile radius.
Magic-User: At 6th can establish a stronghold, attract 1-3 apprentices, and raise 5 sp/person/month in a 10-20 mile radius.
Thief: At 5th may establish a headquarters, and attract 4-24 other Thieves.

Typical NPCs: Note that many characters will have no Weapon Proficiencies! As 'Fighters' this imposes an additional -2 on their attack rolls. Eg a sedentary female given a longsword attacks at -5. Furthermore Strength bonuses and penalties apply, typical STR scores are given. If that sedentary female has STR 5, she wields the longsword at -7 to-hit in all.

1) Non-combatants
Sedentary female: F0, 1d3 hit points, THAC0 21 but -3 to hit. Average STR 5 (-2) to 6 (-1)
Sedentary male: F0, 1d4 hit points, THAC0 21 but -2 to hit.  Average STR 8 (-1) to 9 (+0)
Active female: F0, 1d4 hit points, THAC0 21 but -1 to hit. Average STR 6-7 (-1)

2) Adult Male Human Townsman or Peasant
hd 1d6 or 1d4+1, 1-6 hp (avg 3 hp), THAC0 21 (Fight/Save F0). Average STR 9-10 (+0)
Includes feudal Levy soldiery, untrained Bandits.  Around 20% of the population are men who fall into this category or above ('active male'); another 5% are potentially women with similar stats ('laboring female'). Those with 4+ hp are suitable for training as men-at-arms.

3) Warrior
Hd 1d6+1, 2-7 hp (avg 4 hp), THAC0 21 (Fight/Save F0). Average STR 11-12 (+0)
Includes 'laboring males', soldiery, ex-military Bandits, Norsemen and some other Tribesmen, most mercenaries. Yggsburgh City Guard and professional mercenaries have minimum 4 hp (d6+1, roll of 2-3 counts as 4).

4) Soldier First Class (Veteran)
Fighter-1, hd 1d10, (avg 5 hp) THAC0 20, +1 damage. Average STR 12 (+0) to 13 (+1)
Yggsburgh City Guard 1st class have mimimum 5 hp (d10, roll of 1-4 counts as 5).

5) Knights
Fully trained Knights are typically Fighters of level 2 (Warrior); a minority are level 3 (Swordmaster) or occasionally higher. Average STR 13-15 (+1)
hp 2d10 (avg 11 hp) THAC0 20, 2 atts vs lvl 0
hp 3d0 (avg 17 hp) THAC0 18, 3 atts vs lvl 0

Few human NPCs exceed 6th level. There are very occasional exceptions, particularly among those who have adventured in the Realms of Chaos. These exceptional individuals are commonly termed Lords, Wizards, and similar.

  1. I do have to say i had been thinking about the peasantry and such, if we survive i would like (if possible) to train a number of people to become bowyers/fletchers and slowly introduce compulsory archery for every man, women and child able to draw a bow. (as a sweetner we could offer small regional competitions and a yearly county tournament with prizes)

    1. Basically become King Edward I, and defeat the superior numbers of Dunfalcon's royal knights with your sturdy yeomen archers of Kallent? B)
