Central County Kallent

KALLENT
Crest of the Family Kallent
Earls of Kallent have ruled the County Kallent for generations.  They tend to distrust the Counts of Herdley (Herdley/Arleigh clan), seen as powerful but decadent, and keenly maintain their independence from the Kings in Royal Dunfalcon.  They have good relations with the trade city of Yggsburgh, to the north beyond Redfort. The limestone escarpments of eastern Kallent are still wild, and riddled with cavern networks from which periodically issue forth hordes of orcs, goblins and other foul beasts. The Kallent have several vassal lands, most notably the Baronies of Aldrun and Grane. With her vassal lands it is said Kallent can put two thousand men in the field (1,200 Kallent, 400 each Aldrun & Grane), enough to match Herdley.

Castle Kallent, seat of power of the Earls of Kallent, is situated upon a high wooded crag overlooking the village of Midgrove with its Basket of Pears coaching inn, and the broad River Nemo two miles to the west across the meadowlands. More than two hundred people dwell there, including a standing garrison of fifty veteran yeomen men-at-arms (40 Men, 5 Corporal, 4 Serjeant, 1 Master Serjeant) and around a dozen Knights and other warriors. The Dunfalcon Pike runs between the castle and the river, SW to Dunfalcon and NE to Redfort and Yggsburgh. Castle Kallent lies precisely midway between Yggsburgh and Dunfalcon, some 75 miles from each, and 50 miles from both Castle Redfort to the NE and Castle Herdley to the SW. Midgrove is also the location of the St Trinia's Finishing School for Girls. East of Midgrove is Hortish, a smaller village - the big redhaired blacksmith Jim Poll-Ax is Reeve there. Recently the woods near Hortish have been troubled by brigands, such as the dastardly Oskar Fitch (dec'd).

The Village of Midgrove
Midgrove is a large village of some 850 or more souls, well on her way to becoming a market town. Two miles from Castle Kallent as the crow flies, but nearer four by road, the village has had no need of a palisade for many years, though the decayed remnant of a former wall can be seen.

St Trinia's Finishing School for Girls, Midgrove

Miss Marilyn Maidstone, Headmistress
Located in the sprawling gothic pile of a former nunnery dedicated to St Trinia, the school thrives under the leadership of its redoubtable Headmistress, Miss Marilyn Maidstone, for pupils aged 16-19. Aristocrats, gentry and wealthy middle-class families send their daughters here to be tutored in proper etiquette, the arts and decorum, prior to either an early marriage or further study at the College of Yggsburgh. Maidstone also places great emphasis on physical development, and on summer days fortunate river-sailors may catch sight of a bevy of young ladies swimming in the languid waters of the Nemo or sunning themselves upon the rocks - giving rise to false tales of river-mermaids and alluring sirens.
The School has around fifty pupils in three year-groups, each of 15-18 girls. Each year group has its own Mistress, assisted by three slave tutors imported from the faraway lands of Kalara, Borne, and Neria. Other staff include Pam the sturdy cook, and Wulfred the groundsman.
School Tutors (slaves)
1. Class Mistress Yaleeja of New Shar, Thyatis.
2. Hezia, Nerian Slave Tutor.
3. Isobel, Bornish Slave Tutor.

The Basket of Pears Coaching Inn, Midgrove
This is a large, salubrious establishment, a waystation on the Dunfalcon Pike that marks the midway point between Dunfalcon and Yggsburgh, three days to each at a sedate 25 miles/day by coach, a hard day's march afoot. Similar to Yggsburgh's famous Outs Inn, on a typical night numerous coaches, both private and for-hire, are stabled in the garage, while a half dozen stable-hands tend to the horses.

Horsham Village
See The Swamp Beast of Horsham.
Horsham is a small riverside village. To the west is a stream where the local girls like to bathe in hot weather, and beyond that the bleak expanses of the Horsham Swamp. To the east are orchards, fields and meadows, dotted with farms.
1. Reeve Otto - fat, balding, nervous. Very loyal to Sir Edward Kallent, who nearly died saving his daughter from the Swamp Beast.
2. Rose - Otto's beautiful daughter; kidnapped by a swamp troll M9 YY 96 but rescued by Sir Garrick & co.
